Quick answer: College students score on adult IQ scales — 100 is average, 130+ puts you in the gifted range. This page links to the free adult IQ tests on iqtest.training and explains how to use the result for grad-school prep, self-awareness or Mensa admission.

Take a free IQ test — adult scale

College students are firmly in the adult range. Any of these free tests give a fair estimate of your reasoning ability:

Why take an IQ test in college?

Three genuinely useful reasons — and one that is not useful:

  • Self-awareness. Understanding your reasoning strengths guides study strategies and career direction.
  • Grad-school and grad-exam prep. GRE, LSAT and similar tests overlap heavily with the pattern/reasoning skills IQ tests measure.
  • Mensa admission. Curiosity, credentials or the social network — all valid reasons to try.
  • Bragging rights. The least useful reason. Your IQ is not who you are.

A good IQ score, plain English

100 is average, 110-119 is high average, 120-129 is above average, and 130+ is the gifted range (about 2% of people). See our IQ scale guide or the percentile calculator.

Preparing for the test

  1. Take it when you are rested — not after an all-nighter.
  2. Do not look up answers.
  3. Take each test only once per session; repeats inflate the score through familiarity.
  4. Read the score explanation, not just the number.

Frequently asked questions

Does IQ matter for college grades?

It correlates with performance, but grades depend on effort, time management and health as much as raw IQ. Two students of similar IQ often get very different grades.

Can practising IQ tests raise my score?

Familiarity with the format reduces nerves, but underlying reasoning does not change much. Better to use practice as insight into your weak spots.

Is the GRE like an IQ test?

The GRE overlaps with IQ tests in verbal, numerical and analytical reasoning, but it is a test of specific skills rather than pure reasoning ability.

Online tests provide an estimate and are not a clinical assessment.
